Who needs ConnectIT and why?

The business case for ConnectIT

Every company needs a reliable connection to the Internet and remote networks. 100 Percent IT can ensure you get the fast access you need, at the best price. ADSL lines are particularly suitable for home workers who need good access to the Internet and company network, while EFM and leased lines are ideal for companies requiring constant reliable internet access. We will be happy to recommend the best solution for your needs.

ADSL

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line uses a standard BT copper telephone line to transmit data along with normal voice calls; “asymmetric” refers to the fact that the download speeds are higher than the upload speeds. The speed available on the line depends on three factors:

In some rural areas, the distances mean that only very low speeds are achievable (say 1Mbps download and 256Kbps upload).

There are several different types of ADSL line, dependent on the equipment in the local telephone exchange. Speeds are rate adaptive up to the figures indicated.

FTTC

Fibre to the Cabinet is a new development being rolled out across the UK. The telecoms equipment is located in the green boxes in the street – much closer to your office – with fibre connecting it back to the exchange. This means far greater speeds are possible, with some locations getting up to 100Mbps download and 10Mbps upload.

SDSL

Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line uses a standard BT copper phone line to transmit data (like ADSL) but because of the symmetrical nature of the line it is dedicated for data. Speeds of up to 2Mbps in both directions are possible depending on the product chosen and the distance of the property from the exchange. This is gradually being replaced by ADSL2+ Annex M which has a download speed of up to 20Mbps and up to 2Mbps upload.

Contention ratio

An important factor to consider with any DSL connection is the contention ratio – the number of other users who could be potentially sharing your bandwidth allocation. Some ISPs will contend a DSL service by up to 100:1, which keeps costs low but can result in frustrating speeds at peak times. At 100 Percent IT we carefully monitor our suppliers’ contention ratios to ensure they are minimised; if you have stringent bandwidth requirements, we can offer ratios down to 1:1.

EFM

Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) uses voice grade copper lines (standard analogue phone cabling) and combines multiple pairs to create an Ethernet cable. EFM lines offer synchronous bandwidth (the same speeds in both directions). Speed depends on your  distance from the exchange but is typically much higher than for standard ADSL lines. Theoretically in both directions a 2 pair EFM line can achieve 10Mpbs and a 4 pair EFM line 20Mbps. 3 miles from the exchange a 2 pair EFM line is likely to experience speeds of about 5Mbps in both directions and a 4 pair EFM line 12Mbps in both directions.

Leased line

A leased line is suitable for companies who require fast, high quality, reliable internet access. It is a private, dedicated direct connection between two sites, ensuring that there are none of the contention issues, distance or speed restrictions associated with standard telephone lines. Most of the leased lines we set up are linked to one of our London datacentres, where they connect to the Internet at Gigabit speeds. 100 Percent IT can also supply leased lines in other European countries. Faults are very rare on leased lines so they can be particularly appropriate for companies who require constant internet access; if a problem does occur a service level agreement specifies the time to fix. Any of these lines can be combined by using our BondIT service.
